Grant East, Founder & President Emeritus
In 1976, Mr. East left a successful career in the software industry to pursue a higher calling: giving youth a second chance at education, and a second chance at life. He established Freedom Ministries in Dallas, a nonprofit organization providing educational opportunities for adult and juvenile prisoners.

What is now the TEXANS CAN! network in five cities, began in 1985 as Dallas CAN! Academy, an outgrowth of Freedom Ministries. Since inception, more than 25,000 students have been enrolled in TEXANS CAN! Programs.

The program was originally designed to help local kids earn General Educational Development (GED) certificates. In 1996 Dallas CAN! Academy received one of the first charter school designations in Texas, enabling it to award high school diplomas in addition to the GED. Now all TEXANS CAN! students are working toward a high school diploma.

Mr. East holds a B.S. degree in Engineering Physics from the University of Oklahoma with postgraduate work in Computer Science and System Analysis. In addition, he is an experienced speaker and published author on the topic of successfully educating at-risk youth.
