Diamonds at Johnson Space Center

The Diamonds also visited Johnson Space Center this month with their sponsors, Danesa Samuels and Sheronica Jones. The girls were very excited and were able to learn facts about the launching of the space shuttle. They also participated in a seminar in which they were able to view live webcast footage of the astronauts who are currently in space: Dorothy Metcall-Lindenburger, Stephanie Wilson, Naoko Yamazaki, Tracy Caldwell Dyson. The four women in space during this mission set a record for the most women in space at the same time.

The team members were able to utilize their knowledge that they learned in their science classes (chemistry, biology and physics) to reflect and compare facts that were posted on various displays.

The field trip boosted the young ladies'' confidence and has proven that taking them out of their element and being exposed to positive educational adventures, is well needed. One of the young ladies saw a sign that said "Bay Area Blvd", and later asked, "Are we in Baytown?" Yes it does sound funny initially, but when you really evaluate what she said, it shows the need that our students have for mentorship and expanding their horizons beyond our campus.
